“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Isaiah 41:10
I picked up my grands from school the other day and we made a little trip to the park in their neighborhood. While they were playing, I spotted a butterfly on the ground.
I noticed it wasn’t able to get off the ground. It would try to, but it just couldn’t get off the ground. Apparently something had damaged its wings. I called it to the girl’s attention and they came running over to check it out.
Of course they didn’t understand why it wouldn’t fly away. Claire tried to help it out, which I’m sure did nothing to help it out at all, but I didn’t have the heart to tell her so. I can only imagine how stressed and scared it was. She picked it up and was talking to it so sweetly. Surely, it would have flew away if it could have received her help. She was so sweet. However, it just remained there, unable to move. The only way it got off of the ground was because she had come to its rescue and picked it up.
I thought about how often I find myself unable to “fly”. Maybe my heart has been wounded or maybe I’m just plain ole discouraged or weary. Whichever it may be, there are times when I need help. Yes, I said it. It’s often taboo to admit you’re weak and in need of assistance, isn’t it? It happens though! Am I the only one?
I find I need help getting out of the state I’m in occasionally. I need someone to pick me up and help me along. Some days I feel stuck!
I love this verse. The Lord tells us not to be afraid because we’re not alone. How often do we find ourselves feeling that way? It’s disheartening, isn’t it? God puts that fallacy to rest right from the start. Doesn’t just knowing that we aren’t alone start giving us hope? It’s a comfort to know we’re seen, because if He sees us, He can keep and protect us.
Next, we’re told not to be disappointed or lose hope, because He is our God. Knowing Who He is and who we are because of that relationship helps remind us of all the promises that He’s made and the fact that He cannot lie. It’s not His character!
God promises to strengthen us, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually also. I don’t know about you but when I find myself in desperate need of help, I don’t feel like I can stand on my own. I often don’t even feel anything when I pray. I can become numb and feel like my wings might be broken. Stress and other situations can do that in some seasons. However, we have the assurance that His strength shines brightly in our times of weakness. It won’t be like this always!
We aren’t expected to strive and try harder, He is committed to seeing us through. We’re not on our own, He wants to help us along, He wants us to rest in His arms — kind of like Claire trying to help the butterfly that day. We can always look to the Lord to be our help. He delights in it!
Not only will He help us, He will continue to keep us from being totally overwhelmed by our situations. He is sovereign and all powerful so there is absolutely nothing that catches Him by surprise, nor is any situation too hard for Him fix. We can find rest and peace in remembering this.
Yes, when things seem to be going “all wrong” and when we feel a bit insecure, hopeless and afraid…He is there. He knows how much we can endure. He doesn’t repremand us for having human emotions, but He does invite us to lean into Him and trust Him to rescue us. He always desires what’s best for His children and works all things together for our good. Just wait, we’ll see it later!
We were unable to help the wounded, fragile butterfly so we gently placed it on some pine straw, under the shade of a tree, and felt a bit helpless as we walked away.
I couldn’t help but think about the limitations we have as human beings, but it’s not all negative - because He is the All Mighty. Knowing our limitations allows us to reach out and touch the hem of His garment, it drives us to cast our cares at His feet, it encourages us to lean into Him and depend upon Him. It invites us to trust completely upon Him!
We can’t always save ourselves, but He is always and forever more our Savior. He can! That should give us a peace and encourage us to continue on. “This” very thing we’re dealing with today came to pass. The promises we can grab hold of when we’re living as His children are priceless.
We have this assurance , He’ll never leave us in the shade and walk away from us nor our dilemmas. We can trust Him, rest in Him, allow Him to carry us, wait upon Him as He strengthens and grows us through this very moment.
We WILL be up again, we will fly again…just you wait and see.
Be encouraged and blessed ~
