More Far-Sighted

as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

2 Corinthians 4:18

Hello there!

I’m sitting on my front porch this afternoon, taking a break from yard work while enjoying my ice cold water from my favorite adult, black and white floral, “sippy cup.” (Yeti)

I had an eye exam this morning and over $500 later was headed out the door to wait for them to be ready. I can’t wait to see clearly! It’s been about four years since my last new pair. Needless to say, my present spectacles are scratched enough not to bother cleaning them much anymore, and I’m constantly looking out through my bifocal level.

Healthy eyes. Diagnosis: I’ve become “more far-sighted” and need a stronger prescription.

So, far-sighted, according to Siri, is not being able to see things up close well. As I sat here, I thought about that reference in my spiritual life. You see, I can’t even see my plate of food clearly without my glasses on. I pray that the up-close stuff which threatens to discourage and hinder my heavenward progress becomes more and more blurry. You know, the stuff that gets up in my face and tries to blind me to the goodness and purpose of God? That’s the stuff I don’t want to see, so I certainly don’t mind if I’m more far-sighted spiritually!

What about you? Do you have situations you wish you didn’t so easily focus in on? Are there things in your day which threaten to hinder your forward progress because they get you off-track or keep you from seeing the most important things?

The things which we see right now are “transient”, or not permanent, according to this verse I shared with you. The things which are unseen are eternal! People sometimes say they don’t believe in God is real because they cannot see Him. I say it’s okay that I cannot see Him, I don’t have to see Him to believe in Him. I can see and know what He does! Just like the wind, I cannot see it either, but I see and know its effects. It’s the same.

I don’t know if this makes sense, or if you fully understand what I’m trying to say, but I don’t want to focus on what is staring me in the face. I want to focus on the unseen — the good, the hope, the Promise, the will of God, and His coming. I don’t want to focus on distractions, disappointments, and things which discourage. I want to be “blind” to those temporary things and have Heaven in my view. I realize we must deal with those types of things because we live in this world, but spiritually, I want to keep my eye on the sky for my soon coming King, and be encouraged and inspired to keep on keeping on. What about you?

The next time something threatens to cloud our view, let’s remember we’re more far-sighted today than we were yesterday…and that’s okay. We’re focused on the eternal; we’re in this world but not of it. I want to become more and more far-sighted spiritually. We have to deal with the distractions but we don’t have to allow them to rule or label us - or discourage us.

I can’t wait to get my new glasses, but all I can think about is that huge E I saw at the top of the eye chart today - and I think, eternity. What a day that will be! That’s what is most important to me. Hope it is for you too!

Be blessed and encouraged today ~
